Back then the Coleman lanterns were Coleman kerosene lanterns which had the butane tank and the mantles that we would use for not very much time.  We would have to push down the button that would suction the gas enough to be able to light.  When we had our kerosene lantern ready we would go walking in the dark to the location that we where we would try to catch fish, we hardly ever caught anything, but it was sometimes fun and sometimes very boring.  You had to light it with a match and hold it over the gas entry until the lantern was lit, sometimes you would even burn your finger. 

Using these Coleman lanterns were an essential in camping so we had to take so much care not to break the globe and not to lose the mantles.  The lanterns would go even to the bathroom with us, hence it had to make it through the night.
