Gas or liquid fuel
LP Gas and liquid fuel lanterns (lead free petrol or benzene) give a bright light and are handy to use outside the tent while cooking, washing dishes and so on.
When camping off the beaten track these are handy and easy to use and a cheaper option too.
Both the above work with mantels so be sure to have spares as these need replacing from time to time, especially after traveling on a bumpy road.
Have a sturdy place to put these lamp as they get very hot while in use, and put the carry handle in a down position while using to keep it cooler.
Preferably not to be used inside tents for fire hazard purposes and keep away from small children.
LED lights
LED lights are a good option for use inside a tent for reading at night, and this is much safer option for children.
Most batteries can be recharged and come with battery chargers. Some even for charging from a 12V car battery.
Remember to pack the charger or have spare batteries handy. Fully charge the batteries before you leave home.
Although not widely available mechanical powered Dynamo Led Lights can be found at some places. Cranking the handle connected to a small generator will make the lights come on.
